Reviving Ancient Symbols: The Eye of Ra' Street Art Furniture

Dalia Sadany's Futuristic Interpretation of the Iconic Egyptian Symbol

Blending ancient Egyptian history with futuristic design, Dalia Sadany has created an iconic piece of public urban art furniture inspired by the Eye of Ra. This unique design not only serves as a functional landmark but also as a testament to the enduring power of historical symbols.

Dalia Sadany's design, the Eye of Ra' Street Art Furniture, is a graceful, fluid, and futuristic interpretation of one of the most recognized symbols of all time. The iconic Eye of Ra, also known as the Eye of Horus, has been transformed into a monumental piece of public urban furniture. Once a symbol of protection, royal power, and good health in religious rituals, it now stands as a modern, alluring, and functional landmark.

The uniqueness of this design lies in its synthesis of history and modernity. The Eye of Ra public benches are not just durable pieces of street furniture but also iconic representations of a historically known symbol. The design showcases how creativity can seamlessly fuse two epochs, resulting in a modish accent to any space.

The benches are crafted from two materials: Corian and Resin Polyethylene. Corian, known for its durability and resistance to varying weather conditions, makes the furniture ideal for outdoor use. Resin Polyethylene, on the other hand, lends the benches their feminine curves and sleek smooth finish. The material's ability to emanate light takes the furniture to a different dimension at night, offering the option of inbuilt lighting.

The Eye of Ra’ Benches, set in three pieces, together form the image of the famous Ancient Symbol. The design is functional and interactive, with the benches’ flowing formations usable in dual directions. Users can comfortably utilize it on both sides, inwards and outwards, accommodating sitting and lying positions. The fluid curves are also proportional and playful for children.

The design project, which started in August 2013 and ended in January 2014, was carried out in Cairo. The design faced the challenge of maintaining the iconic character of the 'see it all' eye while transforming it into a practical and artistic piece of public furniture. However, through careful research and the creation of a steel mold, the size, practicability, and comfort of the piece were appraised, resulting in a coherent work.

In recognition of its exceptional design and innovation, the Eye of Ra' Street Art Furniture was awarded the Platinum A' Street and City Furniture Design Award in 2014. This award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, contribute to societal wellbeing, and make the world a better place.
